Last week, the Troy Trojans’ women’s basketball team landed a pair of signings out of the transfer portal.
Troy is coming off a WNIT Runner-Up finish after making a postseason tournament championship for the first time in school history. Troy will have to replace a total of five seniors off the 2024-2025 team and has started with a pair of signings out of the transfer portal in Shakirah Edwards and Aniya Hubbard.
Edwards is a 5-foot-10-inch guard from Panama City, Fla., whose transferring from Mississippi State. Edwards played in 11 games as a true freshman this past season, scoring 12 total points in those games. Edwards boasted a team-best running vertical high and running vertical jump on the MSU team along with a more than 6-foot wingspan.
“Shakirah is a player we identified as a priority for us since early in her high school career,” head coach Chanda Rigby said. “She is a creative scorer and can make difficult basketball plays look easy. I can’t wait for our Trojan fans to watch her play in Trojan Arena.”
Edwards was a star player at Rutherford High School in Florida, averaging 15.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 3.3 steals and 1.7 blocks per game as a senior. She earned Bay County Player of the Year three times. She also was ranked as the No. 49 overall recruit in the country coming out of high school.
Hubbard, a native of Hoover, comes to Troy from Florida-Atlantic. Hubbard sat out the 2024-2025 season after having a stellar start to her college career at Florida-Atlantic. As a freshman, she earned C-USA Freshman of the Year, while also being named to the All-Conference, All-Defensive and All-Freshman teams.
Hubbard averaged 14.1 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.5 steals per game as a freshman. She then averaged 17.2 points, five rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.4 steals per game in 17 games as a sophomore.
“Aniyah raises our ceiling for how good we can be,” head coach Chanda Rigby said. “She is a skilled and powerful player who is a volume scorer.”
Hubbard was a star player at Hoover High and was a McDonald’s All-American nominee during her career. She earned All-State honors at Hoover as a sophomore, junior and senior. She originally announced she would be transferring to UAB this past season before deciding to sit-out and transfer to Troy.
Back in November, Troy also announced the signing of a pair of two international students in 6-foot-5-inch South Sudan native Marianah Mapour and Serbian guard Lana Koricanac. Since the end of the season, Ashley Baez, Leilani Guion, Fortuna Ngnawo and All-Sun Belt forward Zay Dyer have all announced they would be returning for the 2025-2026 season, as well.
