On Monday, the Troy Trojans (28-12, 12-6) were ranked No. 15 in the country by Baseball America after winning their Sun Belt Conference series against the ULM Ragin Cajuns (20-21, 6-12) this weekend.
The ranking is the highest ranking in Troy’s Division I Baseball history. It also marks Troy’s sixth straight conference series win, making the Trojans the only SBC team to win every conference series this season.
After opening the series with a win on April 17, Troy secured the series win with an 11-1 victory on April 18. Troy jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning and eventually run-ruled the Cajuns. Gavin Schrader led Troy at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and one run, while Sean Darnell went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and one run. Jimmy Janicki also hit a double and drove in two runs, while Blake Cavill and Houston Markham scored two runs each. Janicki, Mike Bello and Jakob Wax all collected two hits.
Noah Edders (5-0) remained undefeated on the mound as he struck out nine batters, while giving up just four hits and one earned run in a complete game. Cavill tallied five putouts and a double play with no fielding errors.
“There’s a lot of things that can get you distorted in not only the seventh inning, but really the whole night,” Troy Coach Skylar Meade said of Edders’ performance. “Long wait after the first inning, and so that’s what makes me most proud. Obviously, the stuff was good. The execution was great. Being able to stay just totally engaged in a lot of different scenarios was the most impressive part.”
The Trojans were unable to complete the sweep, however, as ULM took game three by a score of 7-3 on April 19. The loss also snapped Troy’s four-game winning streak. Cavill went 2-for-4 with a homer, one double, two RBIs and one run, while Darnell went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Jay Dill (1-1) took the loss on the mound, striking out two batters and giving up three hits and four earned runs in three innings pitched. Noah Thigpen also struck out one batter and gave up three hits and two earned runs in three innings of work. Cavill totaled 11 putouts, one assist and two double plays with no errors.
The Trojans have a busy week this week with a road matchup against Alabama State on Tuesday in Montgomery followed by a three-game conference series at home against Texas State April 25-27.
