Recently, the U.S Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revoked the visas of two foreign Troy University students.
In addition, 15 international students at Auburn University have had their visas revoked, as well. According to a report from the Associated Press, more than 1,000 students at 160 colleges and universities across the nation have had their visa revoked or their legal status terminated since March with little notice or reason given for the revocations.
In a statement to ABC 33/40, Troy University confirmed that two students had their I-20 Nonimmigrant Student Status terminated.
“The University is in contact with these students and is providing them with assistance and support,” the statement read.
Troy University Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr. also issued a statement on the ongoing issue.
“We are closely monitoring national developments regarding international student policies and remain committed to keeping our students informed and supported in accordance with federal guidelines,” Hawkins said. “As Alabama’s International University, we proudly welcome students from across the globe. Our international students enrich the learning experience for all, and we deeply value the diverse perspectives they bring to our campus community.
“We support immigration policies that enhance our nation’s security, while also recognizing the important contributions international students make to our society, whether in business, medicine, research or other critical fields. Their presence strengthens our university, our communities and our nation.”
In November of 2024, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey commended Troy University in a proclamation for embracing international education. As of 2024, the top countries with the largest student population at Troy were China, Nepal, India, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Japan, France, Nigeria, Bahamas and South Korea.
