- Troy landed a commitment from Georgia Tech transfer running back Trey Cooley on April 14.
This week, Troy Football earned a commitment from Georgia Tech transfer running back Trey Cooley.
Cooley’s commitment to Troy comes following the decision of starting Trojan running back Damien Taylor to enter the transfer portal. Cooley is a 5-foot-10-inch, 205-pound running back that was raised in Raleigh, N.C., and played high school football at Knightdale High School in North Carolina.
Cooley was rated as the No. 9 overall prospect in North Carolina coming out of high school. As a junior, Cooley rushed for 959 yards and 14 touchdowns on just 98 carries. He also tallied 931 yards and seven touchdowns on 125 carries as a sophomore. Cooley skipped his senior year of high school – which was moved to spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic – and enrolled at Louisville instead.
At Louisville, Cooley played in 12 games as a freshman with one start, earning 431 yards and one touchdown on 86 carries. He also caught 12 passes for 173 yards and two more scores. He played in seven games as a sophomore, totaling 278 yards and two touchdowns on 59 carries.
Cooley transferred to Georgia Tech in 2023 and rushed for 274 yards and three scores along with 11 catches for 112 yards and another touchdown in 12 games. Cooley played in just three games in 2024 before an injury sidelined him for the remainder of the year.
Cooley has rushed for a total of 1,009 yards and six touchdowns on 215 carries during his collegiate career with 355 yards and four more scores on 33 catches. He brings 34 career games of experience and three career starts with him. Cooley was teammates at Georgia Tech with Troy offensive lineman Patrick Screws Jr., who transferred to Troy ahead of spring practices.
Cooley will come to Troy with just one year of eligibility remaining and immediately becomes Troy’s most experienced running back. After Taylor’s move to the transfer portal, Jamontez Woods also entered the transfer portal this week.
After Taylor, Woods was the only other running back on Troy’s roster with a career start. He had rushed for 611 yards and seven touchdowns for Troy before transferring to West Florida. Woods also rushed for 565 yards and six touchdowns at West Florida before transferring back to Troy ahead of this spring.
