Pike County Engineer Derick Donaldson told commissioners storm damage from a mid-March tornado is just about cleaned up.
Donaldson said all major damage had been cleaned up, but a scout truck will continue to pick up scattered debris. He said clean-up work was about 95 percent complete, which would free up crews to resume work on dirt roads.
Donaldson said he thought the county would be able to start making progress on grading dirt roads around the county. He said currently, there has been a lot of rain, and crews have been working on maintaining previously graded roads. But, he said now that storm damage cleanup is complete, the county should start making progress on grading more dirt roads.
He also suggested that the commission have the road department install a flashing, LED stop sign at the railroad crossing in Tennille on County Road 4430. Donaldson said there was a recent accident at the crossing, which had a yield sign in place. Donaldson said the stop sign and flashing lights would hopefully encourage drivers to stop and look for a train before crossing the tracks. Donaldson suggested the commission try the stop sign before considering installing crossing guards, which could cost around $350,000 to $380,000.
The commission also approved a request from Facilities Manager Danny Sleasman to enter into a Tran BAS Maintenance Service Agreement. The service agreement would include the Pike County Judicial Complex, Pike County Courthouse and Pike County Health Department buildings.
The commission also approved Sleasman, County Administrator McKenzie Wilson and County Commission President Chad Copeland to enter into an agreement for building maintenance software.
