Troy drops conference softball series to Georgia Southern

The Troy Trojans (27-19, 6-9) lost a Sun Belt Conference series at home to the Georgia Southern Eagles (27-16, 11-4) this weekend.
Troy opened the series with a 2-0 shutout win on April 11. Troy picked up the win with a dominant pitching performance along with a pair of solo home runs from Taylor McKinney and Annie Orman.
McKinney led Troy at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run, one RBI and one run. Alyssa Faircloth (12-5) got the win in the circle, striking out five batters and giving up one hit and no runs in seven innings pitched. It was her first complete game shutout of the season. Caiden Oliva earned six putouts and an assist with no fielding errors on defense.
Troy then followed that up with a 6-1 loss to Georgia Southern on April 12. Makley Boswell led Troy at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a triple and one run, while Cassidy Boltz earned two hits and drove in one run.
Mya Holt (10-4) took the loss in the circle, giving up seven hits and two earned runs in two and 1/3 innings pitched. Kate Peters also gave up two hits and no runs in three and 1/3 innings pitched. The Trojan defense gave up four fielding errors in the loss. Oliva tallied 11 putouts with no errors.
Troy followed that up with an 8-4 loss to Georgia Southern on April 13 that secured the series victory for GSU. The game was tied 3-3 going into the fifth inning but the Eagles outscored Troy 5-1 in the final three innings of play.
McKinney went 2-for-3 at the plate with her second homer of the series, one RBI and one run, while Boswell went 2-for-4 with a run. Orman also went 2-for-3 with a homer, two RBIs and one run.
Esmee Ames (2-4) gave up one hit and three earned runs in one inning pitched, while Alyssa Faircloth pitched three and 1/3 innings and fanned two batters along with giving up five hits and two earned runs. McKinney tallied four putouts with no errors.
Troy now sits in a tie for ninth place of the Sun Belt Conference with a 6-9 conference record. The Trojans will look to rebound this Tuesday, April 15, in a non-conference road game against UAB. The Blazers are led by head coach Taylor Smartt, who was a star player at Charles Henderson High School and Troy before staring her coaching career as an assistant at Troy. Troy and UAB play at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
