High School Baseball: Local teams get set for playoffs

A number of high school baseball teams in the area wrapped up their regular season last week and four teams will continue on into the postseason.

The Charles Henderson Trojans (19-13) split a Class 5A, Area 3 doubleheader with the Andalusia Bulldogs on April 11. Charles Henderson won the first game by a score of 3-1. Chase Vaznaian went 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of doubles and an RBI to lead CHHS at the plate. Cooper Johnson also went 2-for-2 with a double and two runs, while Clay Johnson pitched six innings and gave up just two hits and one earned run. Blake Lowery also gave up no earned runs and one hit in his one inning on the mound. 

Andalusia took game two by a score of 5-1, which gave the Bulldogs the area series win after Andalusia also beat Charles Henderson on April 10. That win also earned the area championship for Andalusia, with Charles Henderson finishing runner-up on the season. 

Andalusia led 2-0 going into the sixth inning but the Trojans cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the sixth only for Andalusia to respond with three more runs in the bottom of the inning to secure the series win.

Clay Johnson went 2-for-2 with a double for CHHS, while Vazanian pitched four and 1/3 innings with four strikeouts, while giving up four hits and one earned run. Cole Pugh also struck out one batter and gave up four hits and three earned runs in one and 2/3 innings pitched. 

As runner-up in the area, Charles Henderson will have to travel to Mobile to face St. Paul’s Episcopal in the first round of the 5A Playoffs on April 18. The two teams will play at 4 and 7 p.m. in a doubleheader. If a game three is needed, it will take place at 11:30 a.m. on April 19. 

Also, the Ariton Purple Cats (22-8) earned an 11-1 win over the Zion Chapel Rebels (13-11) on April 12 in a non-area game. Ariton scored eight runs in the third and fourth innings. 

Wells Ganey led AHS at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs, while Easton Kilpatrick went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs. Price Gill also scored two runs, while Hayes Hammock went 3-for-3 and drove in one run. Gabe Jones also went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs. Hammock pitched five innings and fanned seven batters, while giving up five hits and one earned run.

For Zion Chapel, Brodie Stinson hit a double and Kevan Brown drove in one run. Tyler Bass pitched three innings and struck out one batter, while giving up 13 hits and nine earned runs. Trent Elrod also gave up two hits and one earned run in one inning pitched. 

Zion Chapel’s Brady Flowers was also presented with a $1,000 Gulledge Family Scholarship this weekend. The scholarship takes into account an essay that student-athletes submit along with their GPA, volunteer and work experience and recommendations. 

Zion Chapel will travel to Cottonwood for the first round of the Class 2A Playoffs on April 18 at 4 and 6:30 p.m. If a game three is necessary, it will take place on April 19 at 1 p.m. Ariton travels to Mobile to face Bayshore Christian on April 18 at 4:30 and 7 p.m. A game three will take place on April 19 at 1 p.m. if necessary. Ariton played Bayshore in the State Semifinals last season, sweeping the series. 

The Pike Liberal Arts Patriots (14-13), as the 2A, Area 3 Champions, will host Geneva County in the first round on April 18 at 4 and 6:30 p.m. If a game three is necessary it will take place at 1 p.m. on April 19. 

The Goshen Eagles (7-15) finished up the 2025 season with a pair of losses to Luverne in Class 2A, Area 3 on Friday. Goshen lost game one by a score of 16-6. Tyler McLendon led Goshen at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Parks Snyder scored two runs and Grant Taylor hit a three-run home run. Layton Burgans pitched two and 2/3 innings and struck out three batters, while giving up two hits and four earned runs. McLendon also earned five putouts on defense.

Goshen then lost 13-2 in the final game of the series and the season. JD Burney went 2-for-3 at the plate for GHS, while Will Blackman pitched three and 1/3 innings with one strikeout, while giving up 13 hits and six earned runs. McLendon tallied five putouts with no fielding errors. 

The Pike County Bulldogs also finished off the 2025 season with a 15-3 loss to the New Brockton Gamecocks. 

Daniel Collins, Ben Patterson and Michael Gabel scored one run each for PCHS. Britt Albritton pitched two and 1/3 innings and fanned two batters, while giving up seven hits and eight earned runs. 

For New Brockton, Hayden Pope went 2-for-2 with a double, two runs and three stolen bases, while Jacob Fisher went 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI. James Downing pitched three innings and struck out seven batters, while giving up no hits or earned runs.
