High School Baseball: Pike Lib shuts out Zion Chapel; CHHS falls to Wicksburg

The Pike Liberal Arts Patriots (13-13) shutout the Zion Chapel Rebels (13-9) by a score of 10-0 on April 8 in Class 2A, Area 3. 

The win snapped Zion Chapel’s four-game winning streak and moved the Patriots to .500 on the season. Jack Baggett led PLAS at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and one RBI, while Pruitt Vaughan went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs. Jackson Bowen went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, an RBI and two runs. 

Garrett Whitaker hit a double and drove in three runs, while Kade Brookins struck out seven batters and gave up just one hit and no earned runs in seven innings on the mound. 

For Zion Chapel, John Foster Hamm earned a hit and also struck out four batters in four innings pitched. Hamm gave up seven hits and eight earned runs. 

The Charles Henderson Trojans (18-11) lost a heartbreaker by a score of 9-8 to Wicksburg on April 8. The Trojans trailed 8-6 going into the top of the seventh inning when Chase Vaznaian hit an RBI double that drove in Cole Pugh to cut the lead to one run. Vaznaian then scored on a wild pitch to tie things up 8-8. In the bottom of the seventh, however, Wicksburged scored on a fielding error for the walk-off win. 

Wes Templin hit a triple for CHHS, while Templin, Vazanian and Ben Cochran each drove in one run. Kellen Stewart and Vazanian scored two runs. Dylan Westberg pitched three innings and struck out two batters, while giving up two hits and one earned run. 

The Ariton Purple Cats (20-7) lost 6-3 to GW Long in a Class 2A, Area 4 game on April 8. Wells Ganey went 2-for-4 at the plate for AHS with one run, while Aven Cook and Brodie Lowery scored one run each. Austin Evans pitched six and 2/3 innings and fanned six batters, while giving up 10 hits and six earned runs. 

The Goshen Eagles (6-13) fell to Class 5A Carroll by a score of 10-1 on April 8. Tyler McLendon scored the lone Eagle run. Will Blackman pitched seven innings and struck out four batters along with giving up two hits and one earned run. Cody Boyett earned seven putouts.
