The Troy Trojans (25-17, 5-7) bested the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns (19-19, 5-7) in a Sun Belt Conference series at home this weekend.
Troy won two of the three contests after being swept by ULM in a series the previous week. The series was Troy’s first series win over the Cajuns in school history.
Troy started the weekend off with a 5-4 win over Louisiana on April 4 in extra innings. With the game tied 4-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Troy’s Cassidy Boltz hit a fielder’s choice to second base and Makaley Boswell scored the winning run on a throwing error to secure the series opening win.
Boswell went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, a home run, two RBIs and two runs, while Boltz went 2-for-4 with a double. Caiden Oliva and Annie Orman both hit homers, as well. Alyssa Faircloth pitched seven and 1/3 innings and struck out four batters, while giving up six hits and four earned runs. Savannah Money (3-4) got the win in the circle giving up no hits or runs in 2/3 of an inning. Oliva tallied eight putouts with no errors.
Troy won in walk-off fashion again in the first of two games in a doubleheader on April 5 to secure the series win. With the game tied 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh, Boswell blasted a walk-off RBI single into right field that drove Natalia Turner in for the series-winning run.
Boltz went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and one run, while Mia Tidmore went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and one run. McKinnon Howard also went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Holt (10-3) pitched all seven innings and gave up seven hits and four earned runs. Oliva tallied 11 putouts and a double play with no errors.
“Super excited to make history today as to my understanding (this is) the first series victory against Louisiana, a storied program,” Troy Coach Eric Newell said. “We played well this weekend. Defensively, we played really well this weekend. Obviously, you win the first two, and you want to get the last one but all in all, I can’t complain. This was a really good weekend for us.”
In game three, the second game in a doubleheader on Saturday, Louisiana avoided the sweep with a 4-1 win. Tidmore went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Boswell scored the lone Trojan run. Money (3-5) took the loss in the circle, giving up seven hits and four earned runs. Kate Peters also pitched one inning and gave up one hit and no runs. Oliva tallied 14 putouts with no errors.
Troy returns to non-conference play on April 9 for a road matchup with Alabama State at 6 p.m. in Montgomery.
