No. 20 Troy wins fourth straight conference series

The No. 20-ranked Troy Trojans (24-9, 8-4) beat the Old Dominion Monarchs (9-20, 5-7) in a Sun Belt Conference series on the road this weekend. 

Troy beat Old Dominion in 2-of-3 games over the weekend and the series win marked Troy’s fourth straight conference series win to start the season. The Trojans are currently in first place of the Sun Belt. 

Troy opened the series with a 7-0 shutout win over Old Dominion on April 4. Brooks Bryan led Troy at the plate, going 3-for-5, while Peryn Bland scored one run. Blake Cavill also hit a home run. 

Garrett Gainous (5-0) earned his fifth win on the mound this season, striking out six batters and giving up two hits and no runs. Noah Thigpen also gave up two hits and no runs in one inning pitched, while Colby Frieda struck out one and gave up no hits or runs in his one inning of work. Cavill tallied six putouts and one double play, while Jakob Wax tallied four putouts, four assists and one double play with no fielding errors. 

Troy secured the series win with a 4-3 victory on April 5. Sean Darnell led Troy at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Jimmy Janicki also hit a two-run homer. 

Noah Edders (3-0) got the win on the mound, striking out eight batters and giving up three hits and two earned runs in six and 1/3 innings pitched. Jay Dill also struck out three and gave up one hit and no runs in two innings of work. Cavill earned 10 putouts and no errors. 

“I thought is presence was off the charts, and his stuff coincided with it,” Troy Coach Skylar Meade said of Edders’ performance. “No walks by the bullpen. I think that’s a huge statistic. You’ve got to make them earn what they get.”

Old Dominion avoided the sweep with a 9-5 win on April 6. Cavill went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run, while Steven Meier went 2-for-5 with a double, a triple and two runs. Bland went 2-for-4 with a run, while Houston Markham went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. 

Troy threw seven pitchers at Old Dominion in the series finale. Adam Falinski (0-4) took the loss, giving up four hits and four earned runs in two innings. Frieda struck out three batters and gave up one hit and one earned run in two innings pitched. Cavill earned eight putouts and two double plays with no errors, while Darnell tallied three putouts, six assists and two double plays with no errors. 

Troy remains on the road this Wednesday, April 9, for a non-conference matchup against Virginia Tech. The Hokies currently sit tied for fifth place of the ACC with a 9-6 conference record and 12-6 overall record.
