High School Baseball: Goshen outscores Elba; Zion Chapel tops Pike County

On Tuesday, April 1, the Goshen Eagles (6-10) earned a high-scoring 20-15 win over the Elba Tigers. 

Goshen was in complete control of the game, leading 10-0, going into the bottom of the fifth when Elba exploded to score eight runs to cut the lead to 10-8. In the top of the sixth, Goshen answered with three more runs to extend the lead to 13-8 only for the Tigers to answer with six more runs to take a 14-13 lead. 

That lead didn’t last long, however, as the Eagles exploded to score seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to seal the win. Elba managed one run in the bottom of the seventh but that was as close as it could get. 

Tyler McLendon led Goshen at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and four runs, while Layton Burgans went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs. Grant Taylor went 2-for-4 with one RBI and three runs, while Mason Adair went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run. JD Burney, Cody Boyett and Parks Snyder scored two runs each. 

Will Blackman pitched four innings and struck out three batters, while giving up three hits and three earned runs. McLendon, Boyett and Jack Redmon each earned four putouts with no errors on defense.

For Elba, Brady Johnson went 2-for-5 at the plate with a double, two RBIs and three runs, while Skylar Mitchell went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs. Johnathan Edwards also went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run. Powell Bayne pitched two innings and fanned a pair of batters along with giving up five hits and two earned runs. 

The Pike County Bulldogs (4-12) suffered a 9-2 loss to the Zion Chapel Rebels (11-8) on Tuesday, as well. For PCHS, Daniel Collins went 2-for-4 with a double, while Michael Gabel and Mark Griffin scored one run each. Britt Albritton pitched three innings and fanned two batters, while giving up two hits and one earned run. Griffin also pitched two innings and fanned a batter along with giving up one hit and one earned run.

For the Rebels, Dylan Davis went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Kavan Brown and Joseph LeGear scored two runs each, while Brady Flowers and Brodie Stinson both stole three bases. Tyler Bass pitched six innings and mowed down 10 batters along with giving up three hits and no earned runs. 

The Pike Liberal Arts Patriots (11-13) dropped a 6-1 loss to Houston Academy. Jackson Bowen scored the lone Patriot run, while Pruitt Vaughan, Dawson Bradford and Luke Barron scored one run each. Bradford pitched two and 1/3 innings and struck out a batter along with giving up three hits and one earned run. Charlie Fountain struck out one and gave up four hits and three earned runs in two innings on the mound.
