High School Baseball: Pike County sweeps Abbeville; Pike Lib bests Goshen

A number of local schools were in action on the baseball diamond this weekend, including the Pike County Bulldogs (5-11) earning a doubleheader sweep over Abbeville on March 28.

Pike County throttled Abbeville 14-4 in the first game of the doubleheader. Michael Gabel led PCHS at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs, while Britt Albritton went 3-for-4 with an RBI, three runs and three stolen bases. Ben Patterson also went 3-for-4 with an RBI, three runs and four steals, while Jakori Green went 3-for-3 with three runs. Antonio Patterson scored two runs and Mark Griffin stole three bases, with two runs and one double. Gabel pitched all six innings and mowed down 14 batters, while giving up two hits and three earned runs. 

Pike County followed that up with a 16-0 shutout win over Abbeville in game two to complete the sweep and series win. Gabel went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, two RBIs, three runs and six stolen bases. Ben Patterson also went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs and three steals. Jakori Green went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs. Antonio Patterson scored two runs and stole two bases. Britt Albritton hit a grand slam home run and also stole two bases. Albritton also pitched four innings and struck out six batters, while earning a no-hitter and shutout on the mound. 

The Pike Liberal Arts Patriots (11-12) completed a Class 2A, Area 3 sweep over the Goshen Eagles with a 13-0 win on March 28. Garrett Whitaker went 2-for-3 at the plate for Pike with a double, four RBIs and one run, while Jack Baggett went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Pruitt Vaughan scored three runs, while Jackson Bowen and Cole Garrott scored two runs. Kade Brookins hit a double, scored two runs and earned one RBI, while Luke Barron scored one run. Brookings also pitched five innings and struck out nine batters, while giving up two hits and no runs. 

For Goshen, Grant Taylor and Cody Boyett both went 1-for-2 at the plate. Layton Burgans pitched one inning and gave up two hits and three earned runs, while Tyler McLendon gave up four hits and three earned runs in one inning on the mound. 

Pike Lib followed that up with a walk-off loss to Class 7A Opelika on March 29. Opelika hit an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to secure the 2-1 win. 

Vaughan went 2-for-3 for Pike with a double, while Bowen scored the lone Patriot run. Barron pitched six innings and struck out three batters along with giving up six hits and one earned run. 

The Ariton Purple Cats (19-5) also picked up a 7-5 win over Houston Academy on March 29. Wells Ganey went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, two stolen bases, two RBIs and one run, while Brodie Lowery scored two runs. Aven Cook, Pierce Gill and Grant Jones scored one run each. Reiley Snellgrove pitched four innings and gave up seven hits and two earned runs. Lowery also pitched two innings and fanned two batters along with giving up one hit and no runs.
