Empty Bowls.

For many, an empty bowl means that last of the ice cream or the last scrapping from a pot of spaghetti.

For too many, empty bowls means going to bed at night with an empty stomach.

Too often, we forget or, perhaps just don’t realize that there are people in our community who have to make a choice between buying  a can of beans or having a prescription filled.

Donna Kidd, director of the Pike County Salvation Army Service, said that it’s surprising how many people, especially the elderly, know what it’s like to have a empty cupboards.

“I would like to think that we just don’t know enough to care,” Kidd said. “But, there are people right here in Pike County that are in need.”

On Friday, between the hours of 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. the Pike County Salvation Army’s Empty Bowls Luncheon will be held at Bush Baptist Church. Tickets/donations are $20.

Kidd said the soup luncheon includes tea and dessert and a variety of soups donated by Troy restaurants and individuals.

Of course, every ticket holder will have the choice of selecting an empty ceramic bowl as a reminder that there are people in this world, in the country, in this community, who do not have the nourishment they need to fuel their bodies, Kidd said.

That’s reality.
