Troy Softball drops conference series with Southern Miss

The Troy Trojans (21-12, 3-3) hit the road this weekend and lost two of three games in a Sun Belt Conference series with the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (16-16, 3-3). 

Southern Miss opened the weekend with a 6-4 win over Troy on March 21. Taylor McKinney led Troy at the plate in the loss, going 3-for-3 with a home run, a double, three RBIs and two runs. Natalie Turner also went 2-for-3 and both McKinnon Howard and Makaley Boswell scored one run each. 

Alyssa Faircloth (9-4) took the loss in the circle, striking out three batters and giving up five hits and five earned runs in three and 1/3 innings pitched. Esmee Ames pitched two and 2/3 innings and fanned three batters along with giving up three hits and one earned run. Brantley’s Kayden Dunn earned four putouts with no fielding errors on defense. 

Southern Miss secured the conference series win with a 7-3 victory over Troy on March 22. The Eagles held a slim 3-2 lead going into the sixth inning but Southern Miss scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure the win. 

Boswell went 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, one RBI and one run, while Caiden Oliva hit a solo home run. Mya Holt (8-3) took the loss at pitcher, striking out one and giving up five hits and one earned run. Ames also struck out a batter and gave up five hits and two earned runs in two and 1/3 innings pitched. Troy had three fielding errors as a team, while Dunn earned 10 putouts and one assist. 

Troy avoided the sweep with a 6-2 win over Southern Miss on March 23. While Troy earned just five hits as a team, one of those hits was a solo home run from Dunn. Mia Tidmore also hit a triple that drove in a run, while Howard scored two runs and stole two bases. 

Faircloth pitched six and 2/3 innings with and picked up her 10th win on the season. She struck out four batters and gave up four hits and two earned runs. Oliva earned five putouts. 

Troy is at home this Wednesday, March 26, for a non-conference showdown with the Auburn Tigers. Auburn defeated Troy earlier this season by a score of 12-2 on March 5.
