- Pike Lib senior Coy Bell signs his college letter-of-intent with Mercyhurst University.
On Monday, March 24, Pike Liberal Arts School senior football player Coy Bell signed his college letter-of-intent to continue his athletic career at Mercyhurst University in Pennsylvania.
Bell finished his senior campaign at Pike with 45 pancake blocks and a 90 percent blocking grade, earning All-Messenger honors. The 6-foot-2-inch, 310-pound offensive lineman signed with Division I FCS Mercyhurst over other offers from programs like Mount Mercy, Lindsey Wilson College, Knox College, Hiram College, Carleton College and Lyon College.
“It was really just a blessing from God to have this opportunity in the first place but it really opened up to me after I went up (to Mercyhurst) and visited,” Bell said of his decision. “I kind of meditated on it and felt that was where God was leading me to go and needed me to go to be a light and to play football there and to show people what God can do in someone’s life.”
Bell credited his mother for helping him come up with the acronym HDWH, Head Down Work Hard, which pushed him during the recruiting process.
“That kind of started a few summers ago when my mom and I were going over some of the things and recruiting wasn’t going well,” Bell recalled. “She was like, ‘Coy, you just have to keep your head up and keep working hard and and stay strong and have faith that it will get you there.’ She’s always been there and been my rock through this and just really made sure I kept working and always having a great work ethic and reminded me that no matter how bad situations got, I could always get out of it.”
Bell said that Pike Lib is where he learned that work ethic.
“Pike means so much to me,” he said. “Pike has been a family and it’s taught me how to be a man, how to be a good teammate and how to be a hard worker. Pike has meant everything to me and I will always love Pike.”
Bell played offensive guard, tackle and center during his high school career but will start out at center in college. He’s already setting his sights on his goals for college, too.
“My goals for college are to walk in freshman year and make a name for myself,” he continued. “So, that come sophomore, junior and senior year I’m starting on the offensive line and playing in the pivotal games they have scheduled.”
