- Troy landed a commitment from Decatur (Texas) point guard Javen Colbert this week.
It’s already been a great few weeks for Troy Basketball but it got even better on Tuesday, when Decatur High School (Texas) senior Javen Colbert announced his commitment to the Trojans.
Colbert is rated as the No. 39 overall player in the State of Texas by PrepHoops and is also rated at the No. 9 overall point guard in the Class of 2025.
“I committed to Troy, not just for basketball purposes,” Colbert told The Messenger. “Everyone made me feel welcomed, they have good academics and it’s a real tight culture there.”
Colbert also said that head coach Scott Cross played a big role in his decision.
“Coach Cross has sent me a letter every week since he’s offered me,” Colbert said. “He calls me at least once a week just to check on me.”
Colbert has earned All-State honors the past two years for Decatur High School in Texas. As a junior, he averaged 24 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.8 steals per game. As a senior, he had an even bigger year, averaging 32.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, five assists and 3.9 steals per game. The 6-foot-1-inch Colbert saved his best play for the playoffs this season, tallying 30 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in the district championship.
Colbert’s goals for college are already set.
“My goals for college are to come in and work as hard as I can to get a chance and if that happens just play that role that I need to play,” he flatly said.
Colbert joins a Class of 2025 for Troy Basketball that already includes Sumter Central’s Emmanuel Clarton and Carver-Columbus’s (Ga.) Tony Montgomery. Clarton is rated as the No. 6 overall prospect in Alabama, while Montgomery is the No. 31 overall ranked prospect in Georgia.
Troy’s NCAA Tournament matchup with Kentucky this week is one Colbert is keeping a close eye on and has a prediction, as well.
“It’s definitely going to be an upset,” he emphasized.
