The No. 25-ranked Troy Trojans traveled to Birmingham on Tuesday to face off against the UAB Blazers in the Rickwood College Classic at legendary Rickwood Field, coming away with a resounding 14-2 victory.
Rickwood Field is the more than 100-year old ballpark in Birmingham, which was the home of the Birmingham Barons and Birmingham Black Barons for decades. The Barons are Birmingham’s minor league baseball club. The original Barons began playing in 1885. The Black Barons were one of the best teams during the Negro Leagues era of baseball.
Baseball legends like Willie Mays, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Reggie Jackson, Ty Cobb, Satchel Paige and Jackie Robinson have all played at the legendary ballpark. A total of 182 Baseball Hall of Famers have stepped foot and played on that field. Now, the Troy Trojans have, as well.
Troy jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the second inning and never looked back as the game was never tied again. Sun Belt Player of the Week Gavin Schrader led Troy at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and one run, while Harrison Bowman went 2-for-4 with a double, one home run, three RBIs and two runs. Houston Markham also went 3-for-4 with an RBI and one run, while Jason Hawkins went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and one run.
Jacob Roettgen got his first win on the mound for Troy, pitching four innings and striking out three batters, while giving up one hit and no earned runs. Adam Falinski and George Welch both pitched one inning each and struck out two batters, while giving up no hits or runs. Blake Cavill tallied four putouts on defense.
Former Pike Lib star Mayes White went 1-for-3 at the plate for UAB with an RBI. He also earned three putouts and three assists on defense. White was an All-State player at Pike Lib during his high school career.
The Trojans return home this weekend for a Sun Belt Conference series, and Top 25 showdown, against No. 24 Coastal Carolina. The two sides play at 3 p.m. on March 21, 3:33 p.m. on March 22 and 1 p.m. on March 23.
