The Pike County Sheriff’s Office has released the names of the victims of carbon monoxide poisoning that were found dead in a home near Glenwood on March 14.
Sheriff Russell Thomas said the three people found dead in their home included former Pike County Commissioner Wayne Gibson, 87, his wife, Sylvia Gibson, 85, and their caregiver, Leaterice Cox, 75.
Thomas said the victims were found after a neighbor requested a welfare check on County Road 2276. Thomas said the deputy discovered a car running in a closed garage, but no one had seen the Gibsons recently. Thomas said the deputy was unable to get anyone to answer the door and had to break it down to gain entry to the home. Thomas said the deputy discovered three people dead in the back bedroom of the house.
Thomas said the Troy Fire Department HAZMAT unit was called in to test the home and found high levels of carbon monoxide inside the home. Thomas said it took about three hours to clear the home of carbon monoxide before investigators could safely enter the home.
Thomas said blood samples were taken and sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science. He said the preliminary cause of death has been determined to be carbon monoxide poisoning.
Thomas said he wanted to thank the Glenwood Volunteer Fire Department, Troy Fire Department, the Troy Fire Department HAZMAT unit, the Pike County District Attorney’s Office, the Pike County District Coroner’s Office, Haynes Ambulance Service and Southeast Alabama Gas for assistance in the investigation.
