High School Baseball: Pike County tops Abbeville; CHHS competes at Gulf Coast Classic

A number of the local area high school baseball teams were in action on Monday, including the Pike County Bulldogs earning their third victory of the season.
Pike County (3-10) picked up a dominant 15-4 win over the Abbeville Yellow Jackets in a game that saw the Dawgs earn nine hits and 12 walks as a team. Michael Gabel had a career day for the Bulldogs, as a hitter and pitcher. He went 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run, a double, one RBI, three runs and two stolen bases. Gabel also pitched five innings and mowed down nine batters, while giving up three hits and three earned runs.
Mark Griffin also went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs, four runs, one double and five stolen bases, while Britt Albritton went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, two runs and three stolen bases. Antonio Patterson scored two runs and stole four bases.
The Charles Henderson Trojans (9-9) split their two games at the Gulf Coast Classic in Gulf Shores on Monday, as well. In game one, Charles Henderson throttled Greenbrier High School from Tennessee by a score of 14-4. CHHS earned 16 hits in 31 at bats in the win.
Cooper Johnson went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs, while Clay Johnson went 3-for-3 with a triple, three RBIs and one run. Clay Johnson also pitched three innings and fanned seven batters, while giving up two hits and three earned runs.
Owen Pugh went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and one run, while Kellen Stewart went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Wes Templin went 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs. Chase Vaznaian also went 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and two runs. Will Watkins went 2-for-3 with two runs.
Blake Lowery pitched two innings and struck out two batters, while giving up two hits and no earned runs. Wilson Jones earned eight putouts and two assists on defense with no fielding errors. Charles Henderson did have five errors as a team, though.
The Trojans closed out the day with a heartbreaking 6-5 loss to Robertsdale High School. With the game tied 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth, Robertsdale’s Kael Nelson hit a walk-off sacrifice fly to drive in the winning run. Robertsdale scored six runs in the last three innings.
Wilson Jones went 2-for-3 at the plate against Robertsdale with a triple, while Owen Pugh scored three runs. Cooper Johnson stole two bases. Templin pitched five and 1/3 innings and fanned five batters, while giving up two hits and no earned runs. Dylan Westberg earned six putouts and two double plays on defense.
The Ariton Purple Cats (12-4) dropped an 11-1 loss to the Class 7A Enterprise Wildcats on Monday. For Ariton, Easton Kilpatrick earned one hit and scored one run. Brodie Lowery, Aven Cook, Bryce Odom and Rieley Snellgrove earned one hit each. Landon Givens pitched two innings and gave up three and three earned runs. Snellgrove also pitched two and 1/3 innings and gave up three hits and three earned runs with two strikeouts.
For Enterprise, Troy University signee Brady Richardson went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, two runs and one double. Cayden Boutwell also went 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs. Davis Shiver pitched five innings and struck out five batters along with giving up five hits and one earned run.
The Pike Liberal Arts Patriots (8-10) lost 12-9 to Cypress Creek on Monday. Luke Barron went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Pats with a double, two RBIs, one run and three stolen bases. Kade Brookins also went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs, while Cole Garrott scored two runs. Braden Shirley pitched four and 1/3 innings and struck out six batters, while giving up seven hits and eight earned runs. Dawson Bradford struck out one batter and gave up three hits and four earned runs in three and 2/3 innings on the mound.
The Zion Chapel Rebels (7-7) won their second straight with a dominant 10-0 shutout win over the Elba Tigers. Gunner Jacobs went 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI and a run, while Joseph LeGear went 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs. John Foster Hamm also hit a double and scored two runs. Brodie Stinson scored two runs and stole two bases. Tyler Bass pitched six innings and gave up three and no runs with 11 strikeouts.
The New Brockton Gamecocks lost 14-4 to the Carroll Eagles. Hayden Pope went 2-for-3 with a run, while Will Adkison scored one run and Payton McLaughlin scored two runs. Clark Moran pitched one and 1/3 innings and fanned three batters, while giving up three hits and two earned runs. Gavin Hand pitched two innings and struck out a batter along with giving up one hit and one earned run.
