The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries (ADAI) is celebrating National Ag Day on March 18.
A number of state and federal leaders took the time to thank Alabama farmers for everything they do in their communities and the State of Alabama.
“On National Agriculture Day, I want to say, ‘Thank you,’ to our tremendous farmers all across Alabama and this great nation,” U.S. Senator Katie Britt said. “Whether you are a catfish producer or row cropper or you have cattle or you are a poultry farmer, you represent the very best among us.
“What you do, not only for your community but also strengthening our nation and proving food across our globe, is second to none. Food security is national security and I also say the farming community represents the very best when it comes to our values of handwork, faith and perseverance. Thank you for who you are and what you do for our great nation.”
Agriculture and Alabama farmers provide $77.3 billion to the Alabama economy every year. According to the ADAI, one former could feed nearly 76 people in the 1970s but in 2025 one farmer can feed more than 165 people. Each year, National Ag Day recognizes and celebrates the abundance provided by agriculture across the U.S. American agriculture has played a critical economic and food security role in the U.S. for decades.
U.S. Representative Shomari Figures also issued his thanks to farmers but also expressed a desire to pass a new “Farm Bill” to strengthen Alabama farmers.
“I want to thank all the farmers across the State of Alabama, especially those of you in District 2,” Figures said. “You guys have been the backbone of the Alabama economy for generations and I want to make sure we’re doing everything here in Washington to support you and lift you guys up and pass a strong ‘Farm Bill’ to give you guys the type of resources you need to be to Alabama what you’ve always been.”
