High School Softball: Pike Lib, Ariton, CHHS compete in weekend tournament action

The Pike Liberal Arts and Ariton High School softball teams traveled to Straughn for round robin tournament play this weekend. 

The Pike Lib Lady Patriots (6-7) went 2-1 over the weekend with a loss against Ariton and wins over Straughn and Red Level. Pike opened things up with a 12-2 loss to the Ariton Lady Purple Cats (11-7-1) on March 14. For Pike, Alissa Barron went 2-for-2 at the plate with a double, while Mary Holland Stephens pitched four and 1/3 innings and fanned two batters, while giving up seven hits and seven earned runs.

For Ariton, Nya Allen went 2-for-3, with four runs and two stolen bases, while Macileigh Bragg went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run. Madolyn Hudson also went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Beth Dixon pitched five innings and struck out two batters along with giving up four hits and one earned run. 

Pike Lib rebounded to defeat Class 4A Straughn by a score of 3-2. Sarah Strickland went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs. Madison Nelson scored one run and hit a double, while Haylie Brown also hit a double. Yaley McLendon pitched five innings and struck out a batter along with giving up two hits and two earned runs. 

Pike Lib then finished things off with a 6-2 win over Red Level. Allie Booth went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, two RBIs and two runs, while Mary Holland Stephens went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run. CK Smith also went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Stephens pitched six innings and struck out three batters, while giving up eight hits and one earned run.

Ariton finished the tournament with a 2-1 record, as well. Ariton defeated Red Level to start off the action with an 18-1 win. Beth Dixon went 3-for-4 with three runs, while Makinlynn Munn went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and four runs. Nya Allen also earned two RBIs and scored two runs, while Bragg went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs. Lizzy Faircloth also went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs, while she pitched three innings and struck out one batter with four hits and one earned run given up. Hudson went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs, while Laney Deloney hit a home run. 

Ariton wrapped up the tournament with a 4-0 loss to Class 5A Andalusia. Dixon went 2-for-3 with a double in the loss, while Faircloth pitched three innings. She struck out three batters and gave up five hits and no earned runs. Dixon also pitched one inning and gave up one hit and no earned runs with one strikeout. 

The Charles Henderson Lady Trojans (3-13) also went 0-3 at the Carroll Round Robin Tournament this weekend with losses to Geneva, Carroll, Samson and Geneva County. 

Charles Henderson lost 5-4 to Geneva on March 14. Janazia Cantlow went 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs and a double, while Katy Lynn Lee pitched three innings and gave up seven hits and four earned runs with two strikeouts. Calleigh Compton earned three putouts and one assist with no fielding errors. 

Next, Charles Henderson fell 14-2 to Carroll. Compton went 2-for-2 at the plate with a double and a run. Bailey Jones pitched two and 1/3 innings and struck out one batter. 

On March 15, CHHS lost 9-5 to Samson. Jada Jones went 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs, while Kelis Williams scored two runs. Keirstin Gamble also hit a double and scored one run. Lee pitched two innings and gave up two hits and no earned runs with three strikeouts.

CHHS closed out the tournament with a 11-10 loss to Geneva County. Geneva County scored the winning run on a passed ball. Jada Jones went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs in the loss, while Lee went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, one double and one run. Bailey Jones pitched three and 1/3 innings and fanned two batters, while giving up five hits and four earned runs.
