Pike County will remain under two hazardous weather alerts until the early morning hours.

A National Weather Service wind advisory is in effect through 1 a.m. Sunday. The advisory states wind can reach 15-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. The NWS advisory said winds at those speeds could be hazardous to high profile vehicles and motorists are earned to use caution.

Pike County also remains under a NWS hazardous weather outlook through 8 a.m. Sunday morning. Severe storms are possible in the western portion of the state with winds up to 70mph. Golf ball-size hail and tornadoes are possible in the evening through early Sunday morning.  There is also a slight risk of excessive rainfall in the 2-4-inch range.

Pike County Emergency Management Agency Director Herb Reeves said the EMA has been tracking the storm progress throughout the day. Reeves said it appears the storm is beginning to taper off slightly and is moving to the northeast. In Pike County, he said there still remains a chance for strong thunderstorms through about 3  a.m.

“The storm is moving to the northeast and looks like it is starting to taper off,” he said. “We’re expecting strong thunderstorms. But, the [NWS] still has Pike County with a  3-in-5 possibility of tornadoes. It looks like it may be tapering off, but a tornado could still spin up. Anything is possible with the weather.”

The National Weather Service’s detailed forecast for Troy tracks with Reeves’ assessment.

According to the NWS, “There is a  slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before 7 p.m., then showers and possibly a thunderstorm between 7 p.m. and 4 a.m., then a slight chance of showers after 4 a.m. Some of the storms could be severe. Low around 57. Breezy, with a south wind 15 to 20 mph decreasing to 10 to 15 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.”

After the current severe weather outlooks expire, the NWS predicts no severe weather for the remainder of the week.
