Troy University’s Alpha Tau Omega fraternity will have to walk a long, hard road to Panama City Beach for Spring Break.

On Friday morning, a contingent of ATOs – 36 walkers and 13 support staff – began the 128.3 mile trek from Troy University to Pier Park at Panama City Beach. This year’s march is the 16th annual Walk Hard, a fraternity fundraiser for Jeep Sullivan’s Wounded Warriors Outdoor Adventures.

Jeep Sullivan’s Wounded Warrior Outdoor Adventures, a nonprofit that assists soldiers in recovering from war, including those living with missing limbs and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Kyle Shook, executive assistant to the chancellor, spoke to the ATO walkers on behalf of Troy University Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins, who is recovering from surgery.

“[Dr. Hawkins] would be proud of you for two reasons,” Shook said. “One, this event, Walk Hard, this chapter, shows and proves that there is no greater example of grit and tenacity from any other Greek organization. You’re the roughest of the tough. And, No. 2, The goal for this, raising those funds for wounded veterans, really epitomizes the fact that you guys are sacrificing for those who proved that freedom is not free.”

The ATO walkers departed from Troy University on Friday and will walk 128 miles over six days. They are scheduled to arrive at Pier Park in Panama City around 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19. This year’s Walk Hard campaign raised $140,000.
