Troy Baseball falls to No. 21 after weekend series at USC Upstate

The Troy Trojans (13-3) earned a 2-1 series win over the USC Upstate Spartans (7-7) this weekend but still fell to No. 21 in the D1Baseball Poll this week.

Troy kicked off the weekend with an 11-9 win on March 7. The score was tied 9-9 going into the ninth inning when Troy’s Mike Bello and Shane Lewis blasted solo home runs to secure the win for the Trojans.

Blake Cavill led Troy at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two homers, four RBIs and two runs. Lewis also went 2-for-4 with a home run, one RBI and two runs. Jakob Wax went 2-for-4 with a run and a double, while Brooks Bryan also hit a homer.

Garrett Gainous pitched four and 1/3 innings and struck out a pair of batters, while giving up five hits and five earned runs. Noah Thigpen pitched two and 2/3 innings and struck out three batters along with giving up two hits and one earned run. Cavill also tallied seven putouts, two assists and one double play with no errors on defense.

Troy’s only loss of the weekend came in a 5-4 heartbreaker on March 8. Sean Darnell had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs, one run and two doubles. Bryan also went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run, while Steven Meier went 2-for-4 with a run.

Noah Edders pitched five innings and fanned four batters, while giving up six hits and three earned runs. Colby Frieda pitched one and 2/3 innings and fanned three batters along with giving up no hits or earned runs. Cavill totaled nine putouts and one double play with no fielding errors. Troy also took a blow when Lewis seemingly injured an arm diving for a fly ball in the outfield.

Troy closed out the weekend by securing the series win with a dominant 14-7 victory on March 9. Meier went 2-for-2 with a homer, three RBIs, four runs and two stolen bases, while Darnell went 2-for- 6 with three RBIs and a run. Bryan also went 2-for-5 with three RBIs, one run and one double. Jimmy Janicki scored three runs.

Troy native Drew Nelson earned his third win on the mound, mowing down six batters, while giving up just three hits and one earned run. Jay Dill also pitched two innings and fanned a pair of batters along with giving up two hits and no earned runs. Cavill earned 11 putouts and one double play with no errors.

The Trojans are back on the road on March 11 against Jacksonville State at 6 p.m.
