Stellar pitching lifts Trojans in weekend softball sweep

The Troy Trojans (16-9) swept a four-game series against the UMass Minutewomen (5-14) at home this weekend, let by some ace pitching.
Troy opened up the weekend with a pair of wins on March 7, outscoring UMass 12-0 in the two games. In game one, Troy won 7-0. Kayden Dunn went 2-for-3 with a home run, one RBI and one run, while Makaley Boswell scored two runs and stole two bases. Reaghan Oney, Megan Loftis, Emily Ferro and McKinnon Howard scored one run each. Mya Holt pitched seven innings and fanned one batter, while giving up three hits and earning the shutout in the circle. Dunn also tallied 11 putouts with no errors on defense.
Troy followed that up with a 5-0 victory in game two, led by a no-hitter pitched by Alyssa Faircloth. Faircloth mowed down nine batters, while also giving up no hits or runs. Natalie Turner went 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, while Reese Greene went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Taylor McKinney also hit a triple and scored two runs. Caiden Oliva tallied seven putouts and no errors on defense.
On Saturday, Troy secured the series win with yet another shutout 7-0 over UMass. Dunn hit her second homer of the weekend, while Turner went 3-for-3 with two doubles and one RBI. Mia Tidmore scored two runs. Savannah Money pitched five and 1/3 innings and struck out four batters along with giving up six hits and no runs. Dunn totaled seven putouts and one double play with no fielding errors.
Troy broke out the brooms with a 15-7 win on Sunday to secure the sweep. This win was much more dramatic, however. Troy trailed 7-3 going into the fifth inning but exploded to score 12 runs in the bottom of the fifth to run-rule the Minutewomen. Troy hit three homers in the bottom of the fifth.
Sarah Beth Brake led Troy at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a homer, four RBIs and two runs. Dunn, McKinney and Boswell each hit a home run and scored two runs. Howard also went 2-for-2 with three runs. Holt pitched three innings and gave up three hits and two earned runs. Faircloth struck out three batters and gave up one hit and one earned run in one inning in the circle. Dunn earned four putouts with no fielding errors.
Troy will host Alabama A&M on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
