Troy women eliminated from Sun Belt Tournament

The Troy Trojans (20-13) were eliminated from the Sun Belt Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament in Pensacola, Fla., on Sunday with an 81-66 loss to the Arkansas State Red Wolves (20-10) in the conference semifinals.

The loss was Troy’s second defeat at the hands of Arkansas State in the last two weeks. Troy struggled to shoot all game but in the first half shot just 25 percent from the field and were also out-rebounded 31-25. Troy trailed 39-27 at halftime and Arkansas State led by as many as 23 in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Troy opened things up with a 10-0 run to cut the lead to 65-57 with 6:56 left in the game but the Red Wolves then outscored Troy 16-9 for the remainder of the final frame.

Troy shot 33.3 percent from the field for the game, while ASU shot 35.6 percent. Coming into the game, Troy led the country in rebounding but the Red Wolves out-rebounded the Trojans 53-52 and outscored Troy 28-18 in the paint. Troy did, however, outscore Arkansas State 19-10 in second chance points, while the Trojans also turned the ball over 15 times with the Red Wolves scoring 15 points off turnovers. ASU’s bench also outscored Troy’s 40-15.

Briana Peguero led Troy with 17 points, four steals and three rebounds, while Emani Jenkins tallied 12 points and Shaulana Wagner scored 11 points with seven rebounds and six assists. Brianna Jackson earned a double-double with 10 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks. Zay Dyer also earned a double-double with 10 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Kennedi Montue led Arkansas State with 21 points and eight rebounds.
