High School Baseball: Pike Lib tops Providence; ZCHS shuts out Geneva

The Pike Liberal Arts Patriots (6-5) and Zion Chapel Rebels (3-6) both earned wins on the baseball diamond on Tuesday. 

The Patriots picked up an excited 10-9 win over Providence Christian. With the score tied 9-9 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Pruitt Vaughan scored on a throwing error to give the Patriots the lead. In the seventh, the PLAS defense earned three outs in the first four batters to secure the win. Those outs included pitcher Braden Shirley throwing out a runner trying to steal, a ground out to Dawson Bradford and a strikeout. 

Vaughan went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Patriots with an RBI and a run, while Luke barron went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and one run. Jack Baggett also hit a triple, earned three RBIs and scored one run. Cole Garrott pitched two innings and struck out two batters, while giving up four hits and three earned runs. Shirley also struck out seven batters and gave up seven hits and one earned run in five innings on the mound. 

Pike hosts Robertsdale on Thursday, March 6, at 6:45 p.m. and travels to Oneonta on March 7 at 4:30 p.m. 

The Zion Chapel Rebels throttled Geneva by a score of 10-0 on Tuesday, led by a stellar pitching performance from John Foster Hamm. Hamm struck out six batters and gave up just two hits along with earning the shutout in six innings. 

Brodie Stinson went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, one triple, one RBI and two runs, while Brady Flowers went 2-for-4 with two doubles, one RBI and two runs. Weston Watson also went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run. Dylan Davis scored one run and earned two RBIs. 

The Goshen Eagles (5-5) lost 5-2 to Class 7A Carver-Montgomery on March 3. Tyler McLendon went 2-for-2 at the plate for the Eagles with a triple and two RBIs, while Layton Burgans pitched six innings and fanned four batters along with giving up four hits and three earned runs. Cody Boyette earned eight putouts and a double play on defense, while Grant Taylor tallied six assists, one putout and one double play. 

Zion Chapel hosts Elba on Saturday, March 8, at 1 p.m. 

Goshen followed that up with a 26-5 loss to 5A Brewbaker Tech on Tuesday. Burgans, McLendon, Mason Adair, Jace Alewine and JD Burney scored one run each for GHS. McLendon and Taylor also each hit a double, while Taylor pitched four innings and struck out three batters along with giving up five hits and two earned runs. Boyette earned four putouts and McLendon tallied four putouts and one assist. 

The Eagles will travel to Brantley on March 7 at 4:30 p.m.
