Donald Davis.

Enough said.

On Saturday night, March 1, the Brundidge Historical Society hosted Donald Davis, the Dean of Storytelling, at the We Piddle Around Theater in downtown Brundidge. As usual, the theater was packed and primed to enjoy a night of amazing and unforgettable stories told.

Davis was scheduled as a storyteller for the 2025 Pike Peddlers Storytelling Festival in January. However, due to ice and snow, he was unable to attend.

Being the trooper he is, Davis made arrangements to tell true tales at the WPA theater on his way to Georgia.

“We were so appreciative of the opportunity for more homefolks to hear Donald Davis,” said Cathie Steed, BHS member.

When Donald Davis is in town, everybody is homefolks no matter from wince they came.

Brundidge Mayor Isabell Boyd was attending a storytelling event at the We Piddle Around Theater for the first time.

“And I’ll be at the next one,” Boyd said. “I laughed until my side hurt. Everybody laughed. Donald Davis. I won’t forget that name and when he’s here, I’ll be here.”

Janice Phillips of Ozark has been coming to BHS-hosted events “forever,” and she wasn’t going to miss this opportunity to hear stories well told and long remembered.

“We come to every storytelling event,” Phillips said. “And, Donald Davis has been a teller at all of them. Long after the storytelling. I’ll still be laughing – or getting a little teary-eyed. Stories just stay with you.”

Davis heads a long line of great storytellers. Each is different and each teller is amazing. A well-told story is a lifetime gift, whether given or received.

For Eric Bruggink, also of Ozark, the storytelling concerts hosted by the BHS need to be shared.

He brought a group of 17 along with him and, as he, they were all captivated by Donald Davis and all left with a great appreciation of the art of storytelling.

“This will not have been their last storytelling,” Bruggink said. “Those who came with me were also impressed with the theater and the artwork — with everything. We will be back.”
