Troy senior basketball star Tayton Conerway was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year by the league on Monday.

Conerway, a Texas native, was also the only Trojan to be named to the All-Sun Belt team, as well. Conerway is the fifth player in Troy history to win Conference Player of the Year and is the first Trojan to ever win Sun Belt Player of the Year. He’s also the first Troy player to receive a conference player of the year award since 2004, Troy’s final year in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Last season, Conerway was named the Sixth Man of the Year.

Conerway is third in the conference in assists and first in steals. He’s averaging 13.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, five assists and three steals per game. His 91 total steals this season set a Troy single season record.

“Tayton is extremely deserving of this honor,” Troy coach Scott Cross said. “He is an absolute stat sheet stuffer with points, rebounds, assists and steals, while shooting high percentages across the board. He is a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses and I am glad that he is on our side this week as we travel down to Pensacola, because I would have an extremely difficult time trying to figure out how to defend him.”

Conerway is averaging 16.7 points in conference play this season and eclipsed 20 points scoring six times in the 2024-2025 season. He also earned two double-doubles during the season, including a 12-assist game.

Conerway was the only Troy player to earn All-Sun Belt honors this season. Joining him on the first-team were South Alabama’s Barry Dunning Jr., James Madison’s Mark Freeman, Appalachian State’s Myles Tate and Arkansas State’s Taryn Todd. Marshall’s Obinna Anochili-Killen was named Defensive Player of the Year and James Madison’s Bryce Lindsay earned both Freshman of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year. James Madison’s Mark Freeman was also named Newcomer of the Year and South Alabama’s Richie Riley earned Coach of the Year.

Conerway and the Trojans will play in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Tournament on March 8 in Pensacola, Fla.
