Troy women earn No. 3 seed in conference tournament

The Troy Trojans (19-12, 13-5) women’s basketball team dropped its regular season finale by a score of 89-85 to the Arkansas State Red Wolves (19-10, 15-3) on Saturday, securing Troy as the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
Troy trailed by as many as 13 in the fourth quarter but rallied to cut the score to just one point with under 20 seconds left. The Red Wolves, though, drilled a three-pointer with just seven seconds left.
Both teams shot well from the field with the Trojans knocking down 43.6 percent of their shots and Arkansas State shooting 42.1 percent. Arkansas State, though, shot 42.9 percent from the three-point line compared to just 21.1 percent for Troy.
Troy out-rebounded Arkansas State 47-42 and outscored the Wolves 58-24 in the paint and 10-7 in second chance points. Troy forced 17 turnovers and scored 22 points off turnovers. The Arkansas State bench, however, outscored Troy 32-12.
Zay Dyer led Troy with 22 points, nine rebounds, three assists and four blocks, while Brianna Jackson added 20 points, eight rebounds and six blocks. Briana Peguero tallied 17 points, three rebounds, two assists and four steals. Shaulana Wagner dished out 13 assists, while Leilani Guion scored 10 points and Fortuna Ngnawo grabbed seven boards.
Troy now sets its sights on the conference tournament, advancing all the way to the quarterfinals as the No. 3 seed on March 8 at 2:30 p.m.
