The Troy Trojans (19-11, 13-4) women’s basketball team throttled the Texas State Bobcats (12-16, 6-11) by a score of 86-66 to earn the 250th career win at Troy for head coach Chanda Rigby.
The win was Troy’s 10th straight over Texas State and also made Rigby just the second coach in Troy history to reach 250 career wins. Rigby’s 250 career wins trails only the legendary Troy Athletics Hall of Famer Joyce Sorrell’s 274 wins.
Troy shot 44.4 percent from the field, while Texas State shot 42.6 percent. The Trojans dominated the boards, out-rebounding Texas State 53-27 and also outscored the Bobcats 46-30 in the paint and 26-11 in second chance points. Troy led for nearly 38 minutes in the game, and trailed for less than two minutes.
Emani Jenkins came off the bench to score 15 points, while Zay Dyer scored 14 points and grabbed nine boards. Both Shaulana Wagner and Brianna Jackson scored 12 points each, while Wagner also tallied nine rebounds, f I’ve assists and one steal. Emma Imevbone scored eight points and blocked a career-high three shots, while Briana Peguero scored 11 points and Fortuna Ngnawo grabbed 11 rebounds. For Texas State, Ja’Mia Harris scored 21 points.
The win also ensures that Troy will finish no lower than the third seed in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. Now, Troy sets its sights on the season finale on the road this Friday against Arkansas State in a showdown for the coveted No. 2 seed in the conference. Arkansas State currently sits at No. 2 but a Troy win on Friday would secure that second seed, giving the Trojans a bye all the way into the semifinals of the conference championship in March.
“All glory to God for the success that we’ve had here in terms of securing a top-three seed and gaining 250 wins,” Rigby said. “But the biggest thing on my mind is that game Friday night. It has numerous postseason implications. Obviously, you get the bid to the semifinals in the league tournament, but historically, a two-seed clinches a postseason bid.
“I’m just grateful to Troy for allowing me to stick around this long and for the staff and players I’ve had over the years. Now, we look at limiting the three-point game with Arkansas State and punch our ticket.”
Troy and Arkansas State play at 7 p.m. on Friday in Trojan Arena.
