High School Baseball: Local teams earn dominate wins

The Ariton Purple Cats, Charles Henderson Trojans, Goshen Eagles and Pike Liberal Arts Patriots all picked up resounding wins in the first half of the week.
On Monday, Feb. 24, the Pike Lib Patriots (3-3) throttled Class 5A Carroll by a score of 13-5. Pruitt Vaughan went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, two RBIs and two runs, while Jack Baggett went 2-for-4 with two triples, three RBIs and three runs. Dawson Bradford and Kade Brookins scored two runs each, while Garrett Whitaker earned a double and two runs.
Bradford pitched four innings and struck out five batters, while giving up one hit and no earned runs. Cole Garrott also struck out a batter and gave up seven hits and two earned runs in two innings on the mound.
Pike Lib followed that up with an 18-5 loss to Class 7A Enterprise on Tuesday. Luke Barron had a huge day for the Patriots, going 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, two RBIs and one run. Brookins also scored two runs. Braden Shirley pitched two and 1/3 innings and struck out two batters, while giving up six hits and five earned runs. Garrott also gave up seven hits and two earned runs in two innings pitched with one strikeout.
The Charles Henderson Trojans (3-3) dominated Geneva by a score of 13-3 on Tuesday. Kellen Stewart had a big day for CHHS, going 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, two RBIs and two runs, while pitching one inning and giving up one hit and no earned runs.
Owen Pugh went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs, while Cole Pugh went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run. Chase Vaznaian also went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. Clay Johnson scored two runs.
Will Watkins pitched three innings and retired a pair of batters, while giving up two hits and one earned run. Cole Pugh also pitched three innings and fanned four batters, while giving up one hit and one earned run. Wilson Jones earned five putouts and one assist on defense.
On Tuesday, the Ariton Purple Cats (4-0) remained undefeated by run-ruling Luverne by a score of 17-0. The Cat pitchers earned a no-hitter and shutout in the win.
Wells Ganey went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs and one run, while Easton Kilpatrick went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs. Addison Senn led the way, going 3-for-3 with a double, two stolen bases, four RBIs and two runs. Aven Cook also went 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and two runs. Pierce Gill went 2-for-3 with three runs and two stolen bases.
Hayes Hammock pitched one inning and struck out one batter, while Easton Kilpatrick struck out a pair of batters in one inning of work and Austin Evans struck out two in two innings. Neither pitcher gave up a hit or run.
On Tuesday, the Goshen Eagles (2-2) walloped Pleasant Home by a score of 11-1. Layton Burgans went 2-for-4 with a double, one RBI and one run. He also pitched four innings and fanned nine batters, while giving up two hits and one earned run.
Grant Taylor went 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs, while JD Burney and Parks Snyder scored two runs each. Tyler McLendon also tallied two stolen bases and one run. McLendon also totaled 12 putouts on defense.
The Zion Chapel Rebels (1-4) lost 3-2 to New Brockton on Monday. ZCHS trailed 2-0 going into the seventh inning and scored two runs in the top of the inning to tie things up 2-2. New Brockton, however, hit a walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the seventh to pick up the win.
Macon Allen went 1-for-3 with a double for Zion Chapel, while John Foster Hamm pitched five and 2/3 innings with six strikeouts. He gave up three hits and two earned runs on the mound.
