Free tree giveaway attracts people of all ages

- Free tree giveaway attracts people of all ages The line was long Wednesday morning but the early birds were “almost” assured of getting the free trees they wanted most. The Alabama TREASURE Forest Association, Pike County Chapter in coordination with the Alabama Forestry Commission and the Pike County Master Gardeners presented a Free Tree Giveaway Wednesday at the Troy Sportsplex Parking Lot. Although the Tree Giveaway was to beheld, rain or shine, Mother Nature was on her best behavior and welcomed, the long and growing line of tree lovers of all ages. Debra Huggins Davis, Pike County Chapter member, expressed appreciation to all the sponsors of the Free Tree Giveaway and all of those who came in support of and appreciation for the opportunity to plant more trees of various kinds. The trees that were available at the Free Tree Giveaway were persimmon, pecan, swamp white oak, red bud, red maple, bald cypress, flowering dogwood and crab apple. Every tree was appreciatively chosen except for a few crap apple trees. Davis said the Pike County Chapter of the Alabama TREASURE Forest Association was formed n 1999 and is dedicated to helping make more trees available with little or no cost to those who want to continue to encourage community members to plant more trees. Huggins-Davis said those who are interested in trees and what they mean to the local environment are encouraged to “plant more trees.”
