Don’t call it an upset: No. 21 Troy overcomes No. 18 Mississippi State

The No. 21-ranked Troy Trojans (7-1) picked up a big non-conference win on the road over the No. 18-ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs (6-2) by a score of 6-5 on Tuesday.

Troy took a 1-0 lead in the second inning off a solo home run from Shane Lewis and then exploded to score four more runs in the top of the fifth to go up 5-0. Lewis drilled his second solo homer of the night followed by an RBI single from Steve Meier that drove Mike Bello home. A bases loaded walk drove former Pike Lib star Cason Eubanks home and then Peyton Watts scored on a passed ball.

In the bottom of the fifth, Mississippi State rallied to score four runs of its own off a grand slam home run from Noah Sullivan. Mississippi State tied the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth off an RBI single. The two defenses then settled down with the two sides tied heading into the ninth inning.

In the top of the ninth, Meier hit a solo home run for what would end up being the game winning run for the Trojans. In the bottom of the ninth, Mississippi State had the tying run on third base, facing two outs when the Trojan defense earned the game-sealing ground out.

Lewis had another big night for Troy, going 2-for-4 at the plate with two homers, two RBIs and two runs. Meier also went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and one run. Adam Falinski pitched four innings and struck out six batters, while giving up six hits and three earned runs. Brooks Bryan earned 12 putouts on defense.

Troy returns home on Wednesday for a matchup with UAB at 4 p.m.
