Troy Baseball sweeps Northwestern State in series win

The No. 24-ranked Troy Trojans (6-1) broke out the brooms this weekend with a trio of wins over the Northwestern State Demons (2-4). 

Troy opened the weekend with a 7-1 win on Feb. 21. After falling behind 1-0 in the second inning, Troy rallied to score seven unanswered runs. Blake Cavill led Troy at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a double, one RBI and two runs, while Brooks Bryant went 2-for-3 with an RBI and one run. Steven Meier also scored two runs in the win. 

Garrett Gainous got the win on the mound striking out three batters and giving up four hits and one earned run. Grayson Stewart also struck out three batters, while giving up no hits or runs in two innings pitched. Cavill earned 11 putouts and two assists on defense. 

The Trojans followed that up with a thrilling 14-12 win on Feb. 22. Troy controlled much of the game, and led 11-4 going into the eighth inning, when the Demons exploded to score six runs in the top of the eighth to cut the lead to 11-10. The Trojans added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to seal the win. 

Sean Darnell led Troy at the plate, going 5-for-6 with four RBIs and three runs, while Cavill went 3-for-5 with with four RBIs and one run. Peyton Watts also went 3-for-5 with three runs, while Mike Bello went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs. 

Noah Edders earned his second win of the season on the mound, striking out seven batters, while giving up four hits and two earned runs in five innings pitched. Jay Dill also struck out four and gave up two hits and one earned run in two innings of work. Troy’s defense gave up four errors on the day. 

Troy wrapped up the weekend on Sunday with a resounding 14-4 win in seven innings. Bryan went 3-for-5 with a home run, four RBIs and two runs for the Trojans, while Darnell went 2-for-3 with a homer, three RBIs and four runs. Dillon Kuehl also went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and one run. 

Former Pike Lib stars Cason Eubanks and Drew Nelson both earned starts in the win. The start at short stop was Eubanks’ first career start and he also earned his first career RBI. Eubanks also tallied two putouts, two assists and a double play with no errors on defense. It was Nelson’s second start of the season on the mound, striking out four batters and giving up four hits and two earned runs in five and 2/3 innings. It was also his first win on the mound in his Troy career. 

Troy is back on the road in SEC country on Feb. 25 to face Mississippi State at 4 p.m. in a game that will stream on SEC Network+. Troy returns home on Wednesday to face UAB at 4 p.m.
