Scoring 1,000 points is a big accomplishment in high school basketball and this season Pike Liberal Arts senior Sawyer Keck managed to reach that milestone.
Keck finished his senior campaign averaging 15.7 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists, one block and 1.8 steals per game. He scored a total of 486 points, which brought his career total to 1,051 career points. He also earned All-Area Tournament honors, as well.

“He had a really good season for us,” PLAS Coach Jonny Mitchell said of Keck. “He was one of our top scorers nearly every game and really picked up some slack as sort of our second point guard. As a guy that handled the ball that much he was still able to average over six rebounds per game, which is impressive. He’s going to be a guy that’s very difficult to replace.”
Mitchell said that Keck’s clutch shooting is what set him apart this season.
“In clutch moments he was someone we were always able to go to,” Mitchell said. “One moment stands out is late in the game against Goshen, we had trailed most of the game, he made a bucket to tie the score and then the bucket to put us ahead with four seconds left. He hit a lot of clutch shots for us down the stretch.”
Reaching 1,000 career points is something that Mitchell said is difficult for any high school athlete.
“If you’re on a good team then you’ll have a lot of guys that can score the ball and if you’re on a bad team, you’re usually not going to get as many opportunities either,” said Mitchell. “To be able to be a guy that scores that many points you have to a good player on a good team and do it consistently. It also says a lot about your ability to make big buckets and your consistency night in and night out to be able to be counted on to score the ball.
“He did a lot of the other stuff for us, too, but it’s a phenomenal accomplishment to reach (1,000 points) and not many people are able to do it. In 31 years of coaching, I’ve probably had maybe four or five players to reach that milestone. You have to start at a young age, which means you have to play early on and then you have to be consistent your whole career to get there.”
