High School Softball: CHHS competes in tourney action, ZCHS throttles Providence

A number of local high school softball teams were in action this weekend, including the Charles Henderson Lady Trojans competing in the Greenville Softball Tournament.
CHHS went 1-3 in the tournament, losing to Flomaton in the single elimination round. In the first game of pool play, the Lady Trojans fell 12-1 to Oak Grove on Feb. 21. Jada Jones went 2-for-2 at the plate, while Aderian Greenwood stole two bases and scored the lone CHHS run. Calleigh Compton struck out a pair of batters, while giving up six hits and two earned runs in two and 1/3 innings pitched. Keirstin Gamble earned three putouts on defense.
Charles Henderson then earned a 6-5 win over Carroll later in the day. CHHS trailed 5-0 in the first inning but came back to cut the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the first and then scored four runs in the second inning. In the bottom of the third, Jada Jones hit an RBI double that drove Katy Lynn Lee home for the winning run.
Jada Jones went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, a triple, four RBIs and one run. Bailey Jones pitched two innings and fanned one batter, while giving up no hits or runs. Janazia Cantlow also pitched four innings and struck out five, while giving up one hit and five earned runs. Compton earned five putouts on defense.
Charles Henderson lost 5-2 to Valley in the final pool game. Jada Jones and Cantlow scored one run each. Cantlow also pitched four innings and struck out five batters, while giving up one hit and five earned runs. Compton earned five putouts and two assists on defense, while Lee tallied three putouts, one assist and one double play.
In the elimination round, CHHS lost 12-3 to Flomaton on Feb. 22. Compton went 2-for-2 at the plate with two doubles, one RBI and one run, while Jada Jones and Greenwood scored one run each. Compton also pitched one and 2/3 innings and fanned two batters, while giving up six hits and three earned runs. Cantlow also struck out a pair of batters, while giving up no hits and four earned runs in one and 2/3 innings in the circle. Lee earned five putouts, while Compton totaled four putouts and one assist.
The Zion Chapel Lady Rebels also picked up an 11-5 win over Providence Christian on Feb. 21. Sydney Boothe was a menace at the plate and in the circle for ZCHS. She struck out 15 batters, while giving up just one hit and earning the shutout in seven innings pitched. She also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, one RBI and one run.
Shea Wambles also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run, three RBIs and two runs, while Emily Rhodes went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs. Kayle Hodge scored two runs and Elida Velazquez earned 14 putouts on defense.
Pike Lib dropped a frustrating loss to Kinston 14-10 this weekend despite taking an early 5-0 lead in the first inning. Sarah Strickland earned a three-run home run for the Lady Patriots, while Allie Booth went 2-for-5 at the plate with a triple, an RBI and two runs. Haylie Brown went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs, while Mary Holland Stephens went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run. Camryn Brown also scored three runs.
Stephens pitched two and 1/3 innings, striking out three batters and giving up three hits and eight earned runs. Yaley McLendon also pitched three and 2/3 innings as she struck out one batter and gave up four hits and three earned runs.
For Kinston, Aubrey Norris went 2-for-3 with three runs, while Madisyn Jones went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Lauren Norris pitched three and 2/3 innings with six strikeouts along with giving up five hits and two earned runs. Lilli Sumblin also struck out five batters, while giving up five hits and two earned runs in three innings in the circle.
