Shape Note Singing a sacred tradition

Shape note singing was a tradition that developed around the 1840s, 1850s, 1860s in the rural areas of Appalachia and the South. It’s a form of music that is not heard often in today’s world, and, perhaps, too soon, not at all.

On Saturday, the Pioneer Museum of Alabama will, once again, host a Shape Note Singing. The singing will be dedicated to those like Mr. J.C. Harden who said, “You don’t listen to Sacred Harp singing with your ears; you listen to it with your heart.”

Barbara Tatom, museum director, said there will be no admission charge for those who to come to experience Sacred Harp singing.
