The No. 24-ranked Troy Trojans (3-1) dropped a heartbreaker to the No. 25 Auburn Tigers (3-1) on Tuesday on the road by a score of 7-6.
Auburn had to come-from-behind to beat Troy and errors ended up costing the Trojans dearly. After Auburn jumped out to a big 4-0 lead in the first inning, including a three-run home run, the Trojans rallied to take a 5-4 lead in the second. Troy extended the lead to 6-4 in the third inning, as well.
Auburn chipped away at the lead with a run in the fifth and one in the sixth that tied the score 6-6. The two sides remained tied all the way into the bottom of the ninth. Auburn’s Bub Terrrell hit a single to lead off the ninth but an error led to him reaching third base. After a pair of walks, Auburn’s Ike Irish hit a walk-off single that drove Terrell home for the win.
Mike Bello led Troy at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. Brooks Bryan also earned two RBIs. Steven Meier, Jimmy Janicki, Sean Darnell, Shane Lewis and Peyton Watts scored one run each.
Adam Falinski pitched four and 2/3 innings and struck out four batters, while giving up four hits and no earned runs. Luke Lyon also pitched two innings and fanned a pair of batters, while giving up three hits and one earned run. Blake Cavill had seven putouts and one assist on defense.
For Auburn, Deric Fabian went 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run, three RBIs and one run. Cam Tilly struck out seven batters and gave up no hits or runs in three innings on the mound.
Troy returns home this weekend for a series against Northwestern State Feb. 21-23. The Trojans then head back to SEC Country on Feb. 25 for a game against Mississippi State.
