High School Softball: Pike County, Zion Chapel battle in Dale County Tournament

The Pike County Lady Bulldogs ands Zion Chapel Lady Rebels both opened softball season on Monday, competing in the Dale County Round Robin. 

Zion Chapel finished 1-2 on the day, while the Lady Bulldogs went 0-3. 

Pike County lost 10-3 to Ashford as Hailey Griffin, Paloma Munoz and Abigail Griffin scored one run each. Abigail Griffin went 1-for-2 at the plate with an RBI and a run. Kylan Wilkerson pitched two innings and struck out two batters, while giving up seven hits and eight earned runs. Leah Dixon pitched two innings and fanned a pair of batters, while giving up seven hits and two earned runs. 

Pike County also lost 9-1 to Dale County. Arianna Straw and Leah Dixon both went 1-for-2 at the plate, while Wilkerson scored the lone Lady Dawg run. Taylor Trawick pitched four innings and struck out six batters, while giving up 10 hits and 11 earned runs.

The Zion Chapel Lady Rebels topped Pike County by a score of 10-1, as well. For Pike County, Munoz went 2-for-2 at the plate, while Hailey Griffin scored the only run for PCHS. Dixon pitched four innings and struck out two batters. 

For Zion Chapel, Shea Wambles went 2-for-2 at the plate with a triple, 4 RBIs and two runs, while Aubrey Bassett went 2-for-3 with two doubles and one run. Kaylee Hodge also went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs. Landry Hatoway also scored two runs. Riley Bannin struck out three batters and gave up three hits and one earned run in four innings pitched. 

Zion Chapel took its first, and only loss, of the day by a score of 1-0 against Dale County. Dale County’s lone run came in the first inning. Hodge went 2-for-3 at the plate for ZCHS, while Sydney Boothe struck out seven batters in five innings in the circle. She also gave up three hits and no earned runs. 

Zion Chapel picked up a 7-6 win over Ashford in dramatic fashion. The Lady Rebels trailed 7-2 going into the bottom of the sixth inning but managed to cut the lead to 7-3 with a bases-loaded walk. 

Hatoway then hit an RBI double into center field that drove Elida Velazquez and Bassett both home to cut the lead to 7-5. In the next at-bat, Hodge belted a walk-off RBI triple into center field that drove Emily Rhodes and Hatoway home to earn the one-run win. 

Hatoway went 3-for-4 at the plate against Ashford with one double, two RBIs and two runs. Hodge also went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs. Wambles went 2-for-3 with a run and Emily Rhodes scored two runs. Boothe pitched all six innings and fanned four batters, while giving up three hits and one earned run.
