It was a career night for Jackson Fields as his five three-pointers helped lift the Troy Trojans (17-9, 10-4) to a 71-70 win over the Arkansas State Red Wolves (19-8, 10-4) on Saturday in a nationally televised Sun Belt Conference match up.
Fields’ five three-pointers were a career-high for him, as was his team-leading 20 points. Coming into the contest, Fields had knocked down just three three-pointers all season but was 5-for-7 from three-point land on Saturday.
It was a back-and-forth contest for much of the game but Troy led for almost 10 minutes in the second half. With 2:20 left, Arkansas Stat knocked down a three to put Arkansas State up 62-60. Fields, though, answered right back with his fifth three-pointer of the game to put the Trojans back up 63-62.
After a Troy steal, a goal tend on a Thomas Dowd layup extended Troy’s lead to 69-64 with 46 seconds left. The Red Wolves were forced to play catch up and foul to conserve time for the remainder of the game with Troy holding on for the win.
Troy shot 39 percent from the field in the win, while Arkansas State shot 38 percent. While Arkansas State won the rebound battle 43-35, the Trojans forced 14 turnovers and scored 18 points off turnovers.
The win snapped Arkansas State’s 15-game home winning streak and also put the Trojans into a four-way tie for first place in the conference with Arkansas State, South Alabama and James Madison.
“First, let me give all the glory to the good Lord. We don’t win this one without him. What a beautiful victory it was,” Troy Coach Scott Cross said. “Jackson Fields was amazing. The guy has been in the gym, working on his shot. He hadn’t had a lot of success from the 3-point line, but you can see his shot and it’s beautiful. We got it at the right time. Myles Rigsby’s defense was phenomenal guarding Taryn Todd. He’s such a tough matchup. For a guy as good as Myles to embrace and really want to guard the best player, that’s different. That’s special. That’s what makes Myles, Myles. We feed off that. When he’s like that, our defense is so freaking good.”
Along with his career-high 20 points, Fields added eight rebounds, three steals and a block to his stat line. Tayton Conerway totaled 13 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals, while Dowd added 13 points, four rebounds and a block. Jerrel Bellamy chipped in with eight points and two blocks, while Myles Rigsby scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds with two steals. Arkansas State was led by Terrance Ford Jr.’s 18 points, four rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Troy will be back at home on Feb. 20 for another conference game against Louisiana at 6 p.m.
