Coming Home: Former Trojan Jamontez Woods returning to Troy

Over the weekend, former Troy Trojan running back Jamontez Woods announced that he would be transferring back to Troy to finish his college football career.

Woods, a Gadsden native, previously played for Troy from 2019 through 2022. He rushed for 611 yards and seven touchdowns during his Trojan career. He played for both Chip Lindsey and Jon Sumrall during his Trojan days. In 2021, Woods rushed for 236 yards and a team-high six touchdowns.

Woods rushed for 565 yards and six touchdowns for West Florida in 2023.

Woods played at Gadsden City High School and rushed for 879 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior. He was rated as a three-star recruit and a Top 100 running back in the nation coming out of high school.

The 5-foot-11-inch, 229-pound running back transferring to the University of West Florida after the 2022 season and rushed or 565 yards and six touchdowns in 2023. Woods had one more year of eligibility and rushed for 133 yards and three touchdowns in four games in 2024 but redshirted for the remainder of the season. He will return to Troy with one final year of eligibility.

Woods simply stated, “Coming home,” when he announced his commitment to return to Troy.

Troy also landed a commitment from Coffeyville Community College transfer defensive end Deairich Jackson Jr. The 6-foot-4-inch, 255-pounder is a Jonesboro, Ga., native that played high school football at Mundy’s Hill High School.

At Mundy’s Hill, Jackson earned All-Region and All-State honors as a senior with seven sacks on the season. He started his college career at Carson-Newman University in Tennessee. He recorded one sack as a freshman.

As a sophomore, Jackson transferred to Coffeyville. He recorded 42 tackles, 13.5 tackles-for-loss, 6.5 sacks, one forced fumble and two blocked kicks. Jackson earned All-KJCCC honors last season.
