Former Trojan Omar Haugabook named Sam Budnyk Coach of the Year

This week, former Troy Trojan Omar Haugabook was named the Sam Budnyck Coach of the Year as the head coach at Glades Central High School in Florida.
The award was presented by the The Lou Groza Awards and the Palm Beach County (Fla.) Sports Commission, which annually celebrates the best football players, teams and coaches in the area. The Sam Budnyck Coach of the Year is presented annually the top football coach in Palm Beach County in honor of longtime Cardinal Newman High School coach Sam Budnyk.
Haugabook was a star quarterback at Troy in 2006 and 2007, winning the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year twice, All-Sun Belt, 2006 New Orleans Bowl MVP and Palm Beach County Commission Amateur Athlete of the Year honors during his time with the Trojans.
During his Troy career, Haugabook threw for 5,376 yards and 39 touchdowns along with 929 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground. Prior to beginning his career at Troy, he was a star player at Dodge City Community College. He earned All-Conference, Conference MVP and JUCO All-American honors while at Dodge City and was elected to the Dodge City Community College Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.
Following his standout college career, Haugabook played for the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League and then for the Houma Conquerors in the Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL), earning All-SIFL honors in 2009.
The Belle Glade, Fla., native, was a star player at Glades Central. He started his coaching career as offensive coordinator at Ellender Memorial High School (Fla.). After serving as offensive coordinator at Pahokee High School, he became a school police officer at his alma mater and was named head football coach in February of 2024 at Glades Central.
Haugabook led his alma mater to a 9-2 record in his first season at the helm in 2024, after finishing just 2-7 in 2023. The season included a win over rival Pahokee in the annual Muck Bowl.
