The Pike County Historical, Genealogical and Preservation will host Alabama Department of Archives and History archivist, Justin Rudder, for a free presentation on mapping African American communities.
The presentation will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 27.
Dianne Smith, society president, said the talk is being made by the organization in partnership with the Alabama Humanities and its Road Scholars program.
Cartography, or mapmaking, has existed since the 7th millennium BC, Smith said.
“However, well known maps, just like well-known historical writing, are usually produced by those who exercise political power and overlook the perspectives of groups who lack power,” Smith said.
“This presentation focuses on the development of cartography from Black perspectives of community including an internal understanding of Black settlements often known as ‘the bottoms’ or ‘the quarters,’ as well as a discussion of how to share such information with both insiders and outsiders interested in local history,” Smith said.
