The Troy Torpedoes Competition Swim Team, the city’s year-round youth swim team, hosted the September Splash Swim Meet on Saturday at the Troy Rec Center. The meet featured more than 60 swimmers from the Torpedoes, the Dothan Dolphins and the Wiregrass Aquatics swim club.

 

The swim meet was the first of its kind to be hosted in Troy and featured 63 events. Twenty swimmers from Troy participated and 14 events were won by local swimmers.

Competitive swimming is the fastest growing youth sport in America and that growth can be seen throughout the wiregrass. Professional athletes credit competitive swimming with giving them an edge over the competition during their youth years.

“Swimming got me in the best shape of my life freshman year. Your body feels great after it. Your joints feel stronger, and you also build muscle,” Walter Jennings, the #5 MLB draft pick in 2023 said in an interview. “Swimming helps build up those little muscles you don’t use that can be helpful on the baseball field.”

The Torpedoes are coached by Cassidy Smartt with assistance from Marley Norris and Tori Hinson. Torpedoes members who swam at last weekend’s meet include Emma Estes, Alyssa Forehand, Brantley Forehand, Bryant Forehand, Jax Horn, Hadessah Kullman, Matthew Kullman, Judah Luckey, Adyn Norris, Gwyn Parker, Kolbi Parker, Oliver Parker, Rozzy Parker, Baylor Pennington, Katherin Rainey, Savannah Rainey, Gideon Rogers, Devan Smith, Brea Swindall, Jesse Swindall and Lillian Thompson.
