The Pike County Master Gardeners and the Troy Floribunda Club will host Jason Powell from Petals for the Past at noon Wednesday at the Colley Senior Complex.

The program is open to the public and everyone interested in “pass-along” plants is encouraged to attend, said Leigh Calk, Pike County Master Gardeners president.

“Jason Powell specializes in plants that can be passed down through the generations,” Calk said. “So, those who are interested in plants their grandmother used to have, won’t want to miss this program.”

Calk said Petals from the Past is a 25-acre operation in Jemison where Powel and his wife, Shelley, offer heirloom roses, grandma’s garden shrubs, perrinnials and fruit trees.

“Petals from the Past is also an educational resource for gardeners,” Calk said. “The Powells offer seminars and classes throughout the year as well as guided tours through their nursery.”

Calk said Powell’s father, Dr. Arlie Powell, is involved in Petals from the Past, primarily, with fruit trees. His mother is also involved assisting with plant propagation.

Powell grew up in Auburn and earned a degree in landscaping at Auburn University. He received a master’s degree in horticulture from Texas A&M University.

“While Jason was at Texas A&M, he worked with Dr. Bill Welch who specialized in antique roses and heirloom gardening,” Calk said. “That is where Jason developed a love of antique roses.”

Calk said a light lunch will be served at the Wednesday joint meeting of the Pike County Master Gardeners and Troy Floribunda Club. Powell will bring a variety of plants for sale.
