RISING UP: PCHS seniors challenged to excel

The many achievements of the Pike County High School Class of 2018 were acknowledged by Principal Willie Wright at the graduation ceremony Thursday night at the school gymnasium.

“We are here to tonight to honor our seniors who have accomplished much,” Wright said in expressing his congratulations to the 82 graduating seniors. Wright said the opportunities available to the Class of 2018 had been many and will serve the graduates well as they now enter the next phase of their young lives.

The program was highlighted by the individual accomplishments of the members of the Class of 2018 – Top Ten, National Honor Society, Business and Finance Academy, Performing Arts Academy, Advanced Academic Diploma, Career Technical Education Endorsement, Advanced CTE Endorsement, CTE Completer and Community Service Endorsement.

In the Salutatory Address, Chelsey Adamson challenged her classmates to rise up before any stumbling blocks along the paths to the fulfillment of their dreams.
She quoted American poet Maya Angelou who wrote: “With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes spring high, Still I rise” and encouraged the Pike County High School Class of 2018 to have the determination to “rise up in the eyes of defeat.”

“We have made it to the end of one journey; now we begin another,” Adamson said. She gave God the glory for the success that she has experienced and, on behalf of her classmates, thanked the teachers and administrators, who have charted paths for their futures, and their parents, families and friends for their love and support along the way.

“As we leave, may we always rise to the occasion,” she said.

Valedictorian Endia Brown thanked the parents for their love and support throughout the years and the administration for the many opportunities that have been placed before the Class of 2018 and the faculty members and staff for their guidance and support.

“Eleanor Roosevelt said that the “future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams,” she said and challenged her classmates to, as they enter the next phase of their lives, dream their dreams and “refuse to be average.”
“Failure should not be an option,” she said. “Today is now but our future is forever. Make plans; set goals. Dream your dreams. Dreams do not have age limits. It’s never too late to dream. Don’t be afraid to dream big. We have big world before us. Dreams do come true, so believe in the beauty of your dreams.”
