Memorial Day services to be held across Pike County on Monday

Memorial Day services will be held at three Pike County locations Monday and also at Elam Cemetery in nearby Barbour County.

VFW Post 7055 in Brundidge will host services at 9 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial on Veterans Blvd. and at 10 a.m. at the American Legion building on Highway 231 south of Brundidge.

Martha Roby, U.S. Representative for Alabama’s congressional district, will be the featured speaker at the 11 a.m. Memorial Day Service at Bicentennial Park in Troy. The service will be hosted by American Legion Post 70 and Auxiliary Unit 70 in Troy.

Otis Stone, Post chaplain, said Roby is a strong and dedicated supporter of America’s veterans and honors those who have died in service to their country.

“We are honored to have Rep. Roby speak. We know what she says will honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country,” Stone said.

Patriotic music will be presented by the Williams family and a Memorial Wreath will be placed at the Veterans Monument by Post and Auxiliary members.

Also at 11 a.m. Monday VFW Post 7055 will host a Memorial Day service at Elam Cemetery in Elamville. More than 60 veterans are buried at the church cemetery.

Gene Hamrick, a veteran of Vietnam and Desert Storm will be the guest speaker at Elam Cemetery.

Stone said all who appreciate the freedoms that Americans enjoy and all who honor the service of American’s veterans are encouraged to attend a Memorial Day service.

Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971.
