The Troy Trojans finished the regular season by winning their 10th series of the season when they knocked off in-state rival South Alabama two games to one.

The Trojans won the first two games of the series by outscoring the Jaguars 14-1 in Friday’s double-header.

“What a day. One run in 18 innings? Wow. Just a solo homer,” said head coach Mark Smartt. “It started with Andrew Crane and man, did he come through with a big game in his last one at Riddle-Pace. Jackson Cofer was terrific in game two, then Lightsey got the three-inning save. To hold that offensive team to one run is the sign of a good day on the mound. Our offense finally showed up when Lockridge hit the three-run homer and that woke our guys up.”

With the Trojan sweep on Friday, Smartt picked up his 100th win at Troy.

With the series already locked up, the Trojans celebrated senior day on Saturday afternoon. The Trojans scored four runs in the eighth to take a 5-3, but it was the Jaguars who walked away with an 8-5 win in 10 innings.

A lot of credit goes to those guys,” Smartt said. “We had a lead with our best guy on the mound and they found a way to come back. It showed what kind of team we have to come back and tie it up after that. I’m really proud of our team, we never give up. That’s what postseason baseball is all about; you have to recover and bounce back and that’s what we did tonight.”

Senior Joey Denison finished his final series at home in grand fashion when he a homerun in all three games. All three of his homeruns came with a runner on base and in the eighth inning.

The Trojans now get set to open play in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Wednesday afternoon in Lafayette, Louisiana. The Trojans will be a three-seed in the double-elimination bracket. They will take on Texas State beginning at 4 p.m.

The winner of the tournament will get an automatic bid the NCAA Regional Tournament, but after a 3-1 finish in the season’s final week improved the Trojans record to 38-18 overall and 19-11 in conference, the Trojans still have an eye on an at-large bid.
