Police have made five arrests after a string of thefts Tuesday that included iPhones, candy and drinks.

One adult and four juveniles were arrested after officers spotted a vehicle reportedly used in the thefts and found the suspects inside.

James Lewis Banks, 21, of Montgomery, and four juveniles also from Montgomery were arrested and charged with second-degree and third-degree theft of property.

“The string of thefts began shortly after 5 p.m. when two of the juveniles walked out of a convenience store in the 2200 block of U.S. (Highway) 231 north of Troy without paying for food items including candy and drinks,” said Police Chief Randall Barr. “The suspects ran to a black Dodge Charger, which left the parking lot travelling southbound on U.S. 231. At approximately 5:50 p.m., police responded to the 1200 block of U.S. 231 South where two iPhones were stolen. The suspects were gone before police arrived.

“While police were on scene … a third theft was reported in the Troy Marketplace Shopping Center at 6 p.m.. The caller reported that two iPhones had been stolen out of the store. The caller also advised that the suspects had gotten into a black dodge charger and left the store headed toward 231.”

Police spotted the Charger pulling onto Franklin Drive and stopped the vehicle, taking all five passengers into custody. Police recovered some of the stolen phones, Barr said, as well as wire cutters he said were used to detach the phones from their display cases. The car was inventoried and impounded.

Second-degree theft of property is a Class C Felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison while third-degree theft of property is a Class A Misdemeanor punishable by up to one year.

Banks was booked into the Pike County Jail on a total bond of $4,000 while the juveniles were placed in detention by Pike County Juvenile Probation while they await an appearance before a juvenile court judge.
